Hippie Chic(k) @ 40+

February 21, 2014

I dress according to my mood. Anyone else?  Rocker, preppy, girly, sophisticated, punky, funky …. you get the idea … many moods, many fashion inspirations!  This week the archetype of the free spirited hippie was my style muse ….

Peace, love, and shopping!

Are ponchos still in? Well, I don’t care … I think they’re groovy and full of attitude!

Carlos Santana handbag.  Guess flare jeans.

My husband seems to love the boho chic look on me and bought me this amazing Free People sweater coat for Christmas.

Our home in the Santa Cruz mountains definitely has a bohemian aesthetic.

Fringe heaven …

Another cool Free People sweater coat from the hubby ….

Love all the colors …

In true hippie spirit, I stopped to smell the flowers ….

And this lil fashion puppy is always on hand, eagerly awaiting any opportunity for a photobomb.

So fashion dolls, do you have any boho pieces that you love?  Do you think this look works past 40?  Do you change up styles or tend to mostly stick to one signature look?  I always love to hear your thoughts!

Vday Fun!

February 14, 2014
Just a little post, sharing some Valentine’s Day love!

It’s fun to be a high school teacher on Valentine’s Day. The kids get really into it!
Look at this teddy!

Pretty balloons for one of my seniors from a secret admirer!

Teens and teachers looking cute!

Lots of sweets around today!  Even homemade red velvet cupcakes with candy hearts on top!

And flowers of course!
Here’s my outfit with details and links:

Looking forward to my evening with my hubby and then a whole week off next week!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all my dear sweet fashionistas!

Cold Cali Mountain Morning

February 11, 2014
It was chilly in the California redwoods this morning …

… so I dressed in layers to keep warm!

I tell you, the quick and sloppy top knot is a life saver on bad hair days!
I made sure I carried a clutch today for the “stylemefeb”challenge on Instagram. I found this studded beauty at Nordstrom Rack.
The “arm party” bracelets are from Just Jewels.
Gap Always Skinny Jeans are in regular rotation.
The “vegan” leather moto jacket with fur collar was from Marshall’s.  Adore my Ralph Lauren sunglasses!
The chunky cozy sweater is from Old Navy and the scarf from New York and Company.

I’m wearing my Franco Sarto boots.  Love this greenish gray color … it seems to go with everything … and matches the moss in our tress!

And here’s our little corner of paradise in the Los Gatos mountains.

Is shopping your cardio? My cardio is carrying school books, groceries, etc. up 54 steps!

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I’m really enjoying this new hobby so much and am so thrilled when I get traffic and comments!

In a perfect world, I’d have a photographer to take my pictures,  but as it is, I take all my own photos with my old iPhone 4 and a timer cam.  My only hope is they have an amateurish charm!

Have a fabulous day, my sweet fashionistas!

Peter Pilotto for Target

February 9, 2014

Every good diet has a cheat day, right?  That’s what I’m telling myself today, since I cheated on my “no shop February” by buying some Peter Pilotto for Target items!  And just like a yummy pastry that you enjoy every bite of, this cheat was well worth every “calorie.”

Sending out a big thanks to my fabulous Instagram fashionistas who reminded me that today was the collection debut!  I was there when Target opened at 8am and I certainly wasn’t alone.

I added myself to the line outside with about 25 other fashion addicts.  Then it was the mad rush to the racks giggling and grabbing!  We were women bonding on our shared mission …. “Anyone have a small in the cardigan?”  “Anyone see the red sweatshirt?” “If you don’t buy that, can I have it?!”
It was a fun time!
Off to the dressing room with my picks and the lighting sure didn’t help my questionable photography skills.

(I’ll get better!)

This sweatshirt was cute, but not that flattering.  (I guess what sweatshirt really is flattering though!)
This was one of the cardigans over a dress.
This dress was pretty, but too clingy and form-fitting for work. A lot of the dresses had a very junior-ish vibe, but there were a few good choices for the over 40 fashionista. And the separates had some great picks!  Along with the clothing, the collection had bathing suits, tote bags, sunglasses, and sneakers.  I’m not ready to try on bathing suits, but I did pick out some super fun sunnies!
And my favorite purchase ….
… a super soft t-shirt with a contrasting print on the sleeves.  Here are some more pics I took at home, playing with my new purchases.
With a moto …

With my favorite red bag!

With my red coat.

Too rainy for outside shots, but I took one under the awning!

And one more!
So, was it worth the cheating? I did restrict myself to two items. The t-shirt was $19.99 and the sunnies $16.99 …. bargains!  To me, it was well worth taking a day off from no shopping this month to be a part of this colorful Peter Pilotto celebration!
Did you shop this collection yet?  Tell, tell!

Sakroots!

February 6, 2014

So excited to share that a photo I posted on Instagram got picked to be Sakroots “Instafav” of the week! I didn’t even know that was a thing!

Check out their blog here!

I adore my Sakroots rain boots. They’re so funky and fun!  I always get compliments whenever I wear them.  I also love what the Sakroots brand stands for … planting trees, supporting artists, and good karma!

A few pics of me wearing my Sakroots…. (sorry that my photography skills don’t do them justice!)

Christmas tree shopping!

Last week’s rainy day!
Today!

Hope everyone is having a beautiful day!
And keep the rain coming!
                                                We need it, California!

By the way, Sakroots doesn’t sponsor me and didn’t send me any freebies (but if they want to, they can!).  I just think they’re fun boots and a cool company!

Vintage Pink Coat

February 5, 2014

This is a look I put together to send in to “How I Wear My”… a fun monthly round-up hosted by Adrienne of The Rich Life on a Budget and Jill of Everything Just So.   If you haven’t already, you’ve got to check it out … here.

I tried to channel a little Audrey and Jackie O with a vintage pink coat, classic black pumps, and lady-like leather gloves.  I added some modern twists with rolled skinny jeans and a funky studded clutch.

This coat has been getting a lot of attention between this post and my last one on mixing red, pink, & leopard …. here.  Since it’s a vintage coat from Mom’s closet, I can’t tell you where to get it.  But here are few cute ones I saw online (links provided).

                                                                             Zara

                                                                          Anne Klein

                                                                          Land’s End

And you never know when a trip to the thrift store might yield a vintage treasure!  Or even a trip to the flea market!  Check out Kim’s flea market tips at Northern California Style … here  !!

Red, Pink, & Leopard Part 2

February 1, 2014

Playing with red, pink, and leopard on Polyvore inspired me to see if I could pull off the look with items from my own closet.  Here’s what I came up with!  No shopping involved!

Pink vintage coat, red sweater, black skinnies, red bag, leopard flats.
How about going a little dressy with a black skirt, classic pumps, and a pretty leopard scarf?
And most casual  … with skinny jeans, leopard flats, and a wintery leopard scarf!

What do you think of the red, pink, and leopard combination?  If you try it out and post on Instagram, be sure to tag me @fashionshouldbefun …
Happy February, Dolls!
