Fun & Fashion,

Dawn Lucy

About the blog: Fashion Should Be Fun is me talking to you, other middle aged women like me who are over 40, but not over fashion.  We still want to look beautiful and stylish.  We still want to have fun with trends.  And we don’t need anyone giving us rules, because we’re all different. We all have our own shapes and bodies, parts we’d like to cover and parts we still don’t mind showing off a bit.  This is a place for me to share my love of fashion with you, style ideas, tips, trends, and inspiration. I know how liking the way we look can translate into confidence and energy. I know we have so much life left to live and so much adventure ahead of us. Let’s show the world you’re never too old to have fun and be fierce!

Holiday Outfits for Women over 50

November 30, 2023

I LOVE the holidays!  And I love adding some extra sparkle and bling to my look to celebrate. Usually I won’t buy a new dress or outfit just for a holiday party. Instead I will take some basic pieces that I already have in my closet and add a little color, texture, or sparkle (or all of the above!).

Or put on something casual and shop from your favorite coffee shop!

My buddy Lynn and I had a fun coffee date recently at Crema Coffee on The Alameda in San Jose.  We were excited to try their Red Velvet Latte, which was wonderful iced and is probably even better hot!

What to Wear to Chase Center San Francisco

November 16, 2023

My husband and I don’t go out in the evening too often anymore, but recently we ventured to San Francisco Chase Center to see the iconic Jerry Seinfeld do stand up comedy, with Jim Gaffigan opening. When my husband surprised me with the tickets, of course the first thought was “what am I going to wear?”

Styling Southwestern Patterns

November 9, 2023

I’m loving southwestern patterns right now. I see so many fabulous coats and cardigan sweaters with cool graphics that have a southwest and/or an Aztec vibe to them.

Here I styled my gray and blush patterned coat with a gray leopard print sweater and snake patterned boots.  It sounds awfully busy, I know, but I think it totally works because the color palette is so soft. What do you think?

Styling Fall Textures

November 6, 2023

We’re finally getting a bit of fall weather here in San Jose, off and on anyway!  I was excited to pull out some fall favorites and play with rich fall colors and textures in this outfit for a morning coffee with my buddy Lynn and a day of teaching.

Working Toward a Minimalist Closet

October 26, 2023

One popular minimalist tenet is “one in, one out.”  When you buy something new and bring it into your home, you give away one similar thing.  Buy a new dress, give away one dress.  That way you never increase the amount of things in your house. I’ve always liked that idea.  But since I still have more clothes (and shoes, and jewelry, and books) than I want to have, I’ve decided to try a “one in, two out” system!

But let’s back track here a minute.  Why go more minimalist? Why reduce?  Eventually my husband and I would like to retire and downsize.  I’d like to have a smaller but harder working wardrobe, full of things that fit and flatter and mix and match together.  Full of pieces that I REALLY LOVE to wear!
