How To Add a Retro Piece to an Outfit

May 31, 2019

I love to shop for and style retro pieces. This mod-vibe polyester zip-up-the-back sleeveless top was a thrift store find from a trip to Portland several years ago. I always like to bring home a style souvenir or two from a trip. Retro pieces can really add unique options to your closet and help you create your own individual look.

Tips for Styling Retro Pieces

~ A retro piece can add the perfect pop of interest to your modern basics.

~ I’d suggest wearing one vintage or retro piece at a time.

~ Try not to clash with the vibe of the piece. For example you wouldn’t want to put a preppy pair of pants with a 70’s flower child top. But you don’t want to wear vintage bell bottoms and look like it’s a whole costume either!

~ If you wore this trend the first time around, I believe you can absolutely wear it as vintage. But be extra careful to style it well with modern pieces. You don’t want to look like you just are wearing the same old outfits from 20 years ago!

~ That being said, someone with a really good fashion eye could probably break all these rules and look great. Trust your instinct!

~ I like to hunt for treasures in thrift stores in person when I can, but it’s also really fun to nab great finds on Etsy and Ebay!

My Modern Basics

I’m wearing Chico’s Zenergy Classic Pull On Pants and a classic black blazer Lafayette 148 NY (both c/o). I loved the look with both black leather mules and the plaid booties, so I decided to use both pairs for the photo shoot! I added oversized gold earrings, my classic white leather tote, and tortoise shell sunnies.

By the way, another fabulous thing about adding some retro pieces to your closet is that they don’t go out of style! Here’s the same top four years ago and I love it now just as much!

Absolutely adore that top! And the boots are spectacular. You are so right about retro pieces. They will definitely help you stand out from the crowd. I mix vintage and new often and will sometimes go head to toe vintage. I have mastered the art of doing that without looking too costumey!
