Namilia’s New York Fashion Week show is never for the fashion faint-of-heart. It’s always full of in-your-face statements and this season entitled “The Indiscreet Jewels” was no exception!
Namilia is the collaboration of Nam Li and Emilia Pfohl who met each other while attending the University of Arts in Berlin. Since 2015, the brand has been pushing the envelope with bold fashion and political statements. It’s not everyone’s fashion cup-of-tea, but it sure is not boring!
The Spring/Summer collection “The Indiscreet Jewels” was all about … yes, you guessed it … the vagina. Highly sexualized outfits paraded the runway with a combination of Disney music and rap lyrics. It was an oddly disturbing mix. What was the point? Well, I think the designers were playing with the image of the perfect Disney princess by giving her sexual power that belonged to no one but herself.
Along with the fairytale/princess theme running through the show, the collection also showcased vagina-inspired embellishments. Some of the looks took inspiration from Asian style dresses and embroidery. There also seemed to be a nod to Star Wars with Princess Leia hairdos and an other worldly octopus-looking creature. The shoes were elaborate and almost impossible to walk in (so bravo, Models, bravo!). In general, the show gave a lot attitude and lots of interesting things to look at!
The Namilia website decribes the brand as ….
REBELS. PROVOCATEURS. DESTROYERS OF FALSE PERCEPTION. NAMILIA IS DRIVEN BY AN UNWAVERING REVOLUTIONARY YOUTH SPIRIT COMMITTED AND DEVOTED TO THE TRUE FEMININE IN ALL HER FORMS.
