Our Trip to Eleuthra, Bahamas

Last week, my husband and I went to Eleuthra, Bahamas for vacation. After a year and a half of no travel, we were super excited to get away and go exploring! Here is the story of our trip, the good and the challenging too.

 

 

Eleuthra

Eleuthra is considered a Bahamian “out inland” or “family island.”  With this designation, we knew we were traveling somewhere less touristy and more rural and we were excited about that.  Honestly though, it turned out a little more rural than we had imagined! 

On the positive side, Mother Nature brought her A game and the island is beautiful!  The people are mostly nice and helpful. You can actually end up on a beach by yourself, something totally unheard of at home in the Bay Area!  Though hot and humid, there was always a nice breeze by the water.

On the not-so-positive side, there was a lot of trash on the side of the road and on some of the beaches, which made me sad.  The towns were more rustic than I had expected, with lots of dilapidated buildings and wrecked old cars. There weren’t many amenities available. For instance halfway through the trip, I lost my mascara and couldn’t find any mascara to buy in a 50 mile radius!  That’s really rural to us!  There were a lot of flies and mosquitos everywhere, which I understand are just part of the tropics. There are pricey private resorts on the island and I’m sure that is a different experience. We really wanted more of local experience, and we sure got it!

 

Our Airbnb

I adore Dwell magazine and was over the moon excited to be staying at this funky retreat that had been featured on the cover of Dwell in 20219.  The place was amazing and the view incredible, but we had a lot of practical issues. We lost power and water.  We spend one evening waiting for a repair man and then the next evening having three men spend hours there.  We really couldn’t go anywhere else to wait because we couldn’t even take a shower. My husband understood what was going on more than the repair men, so he ended up project managing (which is his job and what he really needed a break from). He had to stop the men from jimmy rigging a scary fire hazard solution, so thank God we stayed while they worked! Eventually the repairs were put on hold and our host moved us to another one of his vacation properties.  He has since also given us a partial refund for our troubles as well. I really appreciate his efforts to make the best of our bad situation.

Our Favorites Things

One day we took a trip to Dunmore Town on Harbour Island. We had heard it was more upscale than the rest of Eleuthra and at this point in the trip, we were ready for a little upscale! We took a water taxi over to the island and rented a golf cart to get around. We loved this island. It was still funky and quaint, but it was much better taken care of than the rest of Eleuthra. With cute cafes, shops, and the famous Pink Sand Beach, we loved our afternoon here!

There were other things we loved on the island as well. The Looking Glass Bridge is beautiful and you can see where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean Sea. We enjoyed our meal at the Buccaneer Club and coffee and pastries at Da Perk in Governor’s Harbour, as well as the delicious jerk chicken at the Surf Shack in Gregory Town. We loved seeing the local wildlife, like cute little crabs crossing the road, and geckos hanging out on the rocks. And of course the color of water everywhere is amazing!

 

 

The very best part of any trip is being together and with us that is always wonderful!
