Turning Fifty-Five!

June 22, 2021

55 seems like a big milestone to me.  Retirement communities are 55+, right? I can get a 10% discount now on Tuesdays at Ross!  And my retirement options are not such a distant nebulous thing in the far future anymore.  Get old is weird. And fabulous.

Along with a fun trip up the California coast (pic), I’m also spending my birthday doing some serious reflecting.

In the last decade, I spent a lot of time proving myself, to myself. Could I create a fashion blog that someone would actually read?  Yes, I did that!  Would anyone really follow an instagram account dedicated to my style? Yes, they actually did! Could I really go to fashion week?  Yes, I went and even had the most amazing experiences there!  I did it. I proved it to myself. And then at some point, I wondered … what comes next?  I’ve been wondering that for awhile now.  I don’t want to scale up, grow my brand, hire help. Just the opposite. I want to scale back, relax, take a more intuitive approach to blogging … and to life.

It feels like a new time in my life.  My menopause symptoms are few and far between; I’m clearly post menopausal now.  I’ve had some health challenges, nothing too serious, but always a wake up call.  And then there was the pandemic. And everything together seemed to be whispering the same message in my ear … slow down, be more intentional about your time and energy, keep your priorities front and center.

So, I’m facing 55 with a new sense of wonder and excitement. I don’t know what’s next, but I feel like it’s going to be fabulous … maybe a quieter type of fabulous, but absolutely fabulous just the same.

What’s that mean for Fashion Should Be Fun?  I’m not sure yet.  I know I want to do some writing that’s not really fashion related, but I don’t know if that means expanding Fashion Should Be Fun or starting something new. But whatever it means, Fashion Should Be Fun isn’t going anywhere.  It’s become as much a part of my life as … coffee. And I really value our shared midlife style journey … and just our journey together in general.

Here’s to another year together, Ladies! I can’t thank you enough for all your support!

Fun & Fashion,

Dawn Lucy

About the blog: Fashion Should Be Fun is ME talking to YOU, other middle-aged women who are over 40, but not over fashion.  We still want to look beautiful and stylish.  We still want to have fun with trends.  And we don’t need anyone giving us rules, because we’re all different. This is a place for me to share my love of fashion with you, including style ideas, tips, trends, and inspiration. I know how liking the way we look can translate into confidence and energy. I know we have so much life left to live and so much adventure ahead of us. Let’s show the world you’re never too old to have fun and look fierce!

    Happy birthday!

I turned 61 on June 9th! OMG! Ha Ha

I know just what you mean about blogging. A couple of years ago I decided my blog would be all about me having fun. I don’t even consider collabs anymore and I don’t put pressure on myself for anything other than enjoying my hobby. And you know what? It is more fun now than ever! I do still find items that readers can shop because I love to do that too!

My only thing now is learning to be more environmentally aware regarding fashion. That will be a challenge and I’m not sure how to go about it. I read an article about how second hand is growing way faster than fast fashion and I do love second hand, maybe I will go that route. Ha ha, sorry to go off an a tangent!

    Have a wonderful birthday!

    Peace!
    Cheryl

Aww thanks so much for this thoughtful response, Cheryl. I was pushing myself too hard as well and I’m going to be all about having the fun!! And yes to more eco-friendly choices. I’m making that transition as well. Love hearing from you!

Absolutely love this Dawn! I’m in the same boat. I don’t know if it was the pandemic, having a 3 yr old, or almost a decade of blogging that made me say – wait a minute, let’s take an approach that isn’t so urgent/isn’t from a place of “should”. Love you and the fact that I met you through this wonderful blog!
