Can you wear a brooch without looking old-fashioned and frumpy?
That was the question I asked myself before I participated in this month’s “How I Wear My” style challenge!
Well, how did I do?
I was excited to have reason to style this antique silver art nouveau brooch that I’ve had for years. I always liked it because I thought it looked a little gothic.
I thought an antique brooch and this hand-me-down coat from my mother might be too much vintage for one outfit, but I loved them together.
What do you think? Would you rock a brooch?
Three favs from last week ….
Cathy, my fellow Bay Area Fashionista, looks chic and on point in this LBD!
Jacqueline of Petite Silver Vixen is a ball of sass and spirit in this fun look!
And isn’t Jennie of A Pocketful of Polka Dots looking stunning? One of my fav pics of beautiful Jennie!
Now, link up, link back, & have fun.
And hey, grab a button (and yes, I fixed the size … promise … so sorry to all of you who had to deal with my gargantuan button!)

Absolutely, you can wear a brooch without seeming like a grandma…it all depends on the brooch and the placement. Just like you've done here, it can be a fun and often forgotten accessory.
Agreed! 🙂

You've managed a perfect balance of military chic and rockerish edge with this outfit, dearest Dawn!! The coat is AMAZING (Mom was obviously a fashion maven, too!) and that brooch?? Super cool!! P.S. Even though I haven't worn one in a while, my favourite trick for styling a brooch is using it as a hair pin!! XOXO

Oh as a hair pin! How cool! I'll try it! OXOX
Hi Dawn

Aww thanks so much, Dear! OXOX
I think you look great — and I think we need to re-frame what we mean when we say "look like a grandma"… I am a 53-year-old with twin 9-month-old grandchildren and I generally look pretty good too. Being a grandmother is a wonderful life stage, just like being over 40 (or over 50 or whatever) is. I didn't suddenly change when my oldest son and his wife decided to have kids. I'm still the same unique, special person, with my own style. I'm sure you didn't mean to insult anyone but it does reflect a bias in our culture about what a grandmother is or looks like… Would love to have you write again about grandmothers and style, with some of these ideas in mind. Thanks!
Oh my gosh, you're so right! What was I thinking? I totally apologize!
I changed my wording and again I apologize. I'm totally old enough to be a grandma myself. It's an old expression that I used without even thinking about it. Thanks for pointing that out.
Thanks for the response! Sometimes it takes someone with a different life experience or perspective to help us realize that there might be another way of looking at something. Figured it was better to communicate than to just stew about it. Thanks again for listening.
Amazing brooch though, I love it, looks good on you, but not for grandma :), thank you for sharing, you look gorgeous!!!

Your brooch looks so fun with this gorgeous military coat.
Happy weekend hun!
this is such an amazing styling Dawn! Love that coat and the brooch with it. And the boots and you look fabulous. I also got a coat like it but am wearing my camel one to death at the moment 🙂 And I also totally appreciate Linda Grier's comment. She is totally right. We are using words (me that is) that are not meant to hurt but totally reflect an outdated perspective. Love being part of this fashion blogging community that is changing the way things are being perceived! xo Sabina | Oceanblue Style
Looks great!

I'm a huge fan of brooches, especially vintage ones. I love how you chose an all black canvas so that the brooch is the feature. Thank you for hosting.
