Sweater Dresses for Pear Shapes

December 13, 2016

I love the idea of a sweater dress, but unfortunately those of us who are pear-shaped have a hard time wearing a straight up and down sweater dress.  Usually it will pull across the hips and cling to the rear end!  Fit and flare sweater dresses are much more flattering for us.

I bought this BCBG sweater dress on clearance at the end of the season last year.  I pulled it out the other day and thought how cute and comfy a sweater dress would be for the holidays!  This exact dress is no longer available, but I linked up some really cute ones, many on sale right now.  Another tip? Wearing a little half slip under the sweater dress will also help to keep it from clinging.

How are the holiday plans coming along, Dolls?  We have a decorated house and tree now and I have most of my gifts bought!  Most of your know along with being a style blogger, I’m also a high school English teacher. It will be a very busy week for me, giving and correcting finals and giving out semester grades.  But then … the 2 week vacay starts Friday evening and I’m SO ready!

You and me both, I have the exact same problem, looks like you picked out some great picks!

      Thanks, Sarah! 🙂

It’s great to know someone else has the same problem. Usually I find either the top fits or the bottom fits, but it’s very hard to find dresses that fit both top and bottom. I’d love to be able to wear more dresses, but it’s not easy. I’m long in the body and short in the legs although I am 5ft 6ins.
Another problem I find is I never know whether to wear longer line blazers to cover my behind, or shorter jackets which show it off. I end up always wearing the same ‘uniform’ although I try very hard not to.
I’ve been trying tunics with leggings sometimes and this is a good look for me, but possibly not so fashionable now.
I don’t know why some bloggers think the ‘pear’ is an enviable shape, I think it’s difficult and quite unflattering. Do you enjoy your shape or would you prefer to be more in proportion?

      Hi Aileen,

I would rather be more proportional as well, but I’ve learned to work with it over the years. One of my 2017 goals is to give us pears more style advice, so keep an eye out for that! I’ll definitely do a post on jacket lengths. In a nutshell, I think cropped or extra long work best. Try not to have the jacket end right at your biggest part you know?! What a stunning dress! I love the print and that cute little jacket! I am not lead shaped but I just orderd a black dress like that at h&m.

Sweet! I love sweater dresses, but my pear shape never fit the clingy-ness of the material. Nice to know there are some cute options out there for us pears 🙂

You know I hear you, Girl! A fit and flare dress with a half slip underneath might be just the ticket!

Such a cute dress, and some great picks with the others you have shown. I’m not pear shaped but don’t have much of a waist so sweater dresses don’t do much for me either. I love fit and flare dresses.
