Spring 2023 Trends from NYFW!

September 19, 2022

It’s always so fun to watch the runway shows, even if it’s just on social media! I love seeing the creativity and art of it all.  And because the fashion world is all related, it’s always interesting to see what trends are showing up in the collective fashion consciousness.

As I’ve said before, I look at trends as a fun way to expand and freshen up my wardrobe. I never feel like I must follow a trend, but when a trend comes along that I like, I know that will be a good investment piece for me.

Here are the biggest trends, along with some discussion, and as well as a note on how I will (or will not) be incorporating these trends into my daily style.

Belly Button Windows

Here are looks from LaQuan Smith, Monse, and Fendi shows.  The belly button is peeking out all over the place on the runway! From totally bare midriffs to more subtle belly button  “windows,” this look is definitely in. And while I dared to bare a midriff in the early aughts, I will definitely be skipping the trend this time around!  What I might do though is wear the belly button window look, but with a tank or something showing instead of my actually belly. And just to be clear, I’m not saying any age is too old to wear this, but I personally will be passing!

Bell Bottoms/Puddle Pants

This is a trend I love, love, love!  Here are looks from Peter Do, Lafayette 148, and R13.  I just bought some very long baggy jeans to wear for fall. My only concern with this trend is that it takes me a minute to see my hems drag on the ground and be okay with it. Right this moment, I’m a little obsessed with this Del Core suit with wide leg long pants, but I can’t imagine spending THAT much money on something that will be dragging on the ground.

Bubble/Flounce Skirts

Here are looks from JW Anderson, Bach Mai, and Proenza Schouler. I remember having a bubble skirt in the late 80’s.  Anyone remember that trend from way back when?  I will probably be skipping it this time around, though the way the Proenza Schouler styled this look, it really does look sophisticated and cool.

Utility/ Cargo

Luar, Dion Lee, and Frankie all showed off their cargo looks on the runway.  I love the look.  It’s kind of like urban adventure gear!  Cargo pants aren’t usually too flattering on me though, so it would definitely need to be just the right pair of pants to get me to invest. I will keep an eye out for a good utility jacket though.

I have a utility vest from the Gap that’s probably 10 years old and always makes every closet clean-out cut.  I just pulled that out and think it actually looks really fresh again.  Style tip: always check your closet before you go spend!

Neons

Neons are so fun and eye-catching!  Although I love these head to toe neon looks from Molly Goddard, Wiederhoeft, and Aliette, I will probably settle on adding a pop of neon here and there instead.  Maybe a neon bag or sweater?  I’ll be keeping my eyes open.  I love charcoal gray with neon green, so I do have a desire to create a look with these two shades!

Well Dear Readers, what do you think? Are any of these trends making you feel excited and ready for a new piece?  Are there any trends that you’ll definitely be passing on?
