So, as most of you know, I’ve been spending more time out and about at live music venues since my husband has been singing with a rock band. It got me thinking that maybe some midlife babes could use a little guidance about what to wear for an evening of live local music or a big concert. Dolls, I’ve got you covered with my tips for dressing for a rock concert over 40!
Before I get to my tips, always remember my first rule of fashion: what makes you feel fabulous is always the best thing to wear, no matter what anyone says, including me!
What to Wear
Jeans – Every rocker chic chick needs a pair of fabulous jeans: boot cut, bell bottom, skinny jeans, blue or black. Add some edge with rips and raw hems!
Shoes – You need shoes comfortable enough for dancing, but cool enough for your look. I suggest booties, 2-3 inches high. Black is classic choice and if it has studded details, even better! A pair of snakeskin or croc effect boots will look cool and trendy too.
Tops – Band tees, sheer or lace blouse, with a cami, (I’d pass on the low cut “Bitchin” tee that got your husband’s attention in 1985, but you know … that’s just me.)
Shop Band Tees
Shop Blouses
Jacket – A leather (or faux leather) moto jacket is always a go to. I also love a velvet blazer for another cool look. Or take your outfit up another level with a fun faux fur coat!
Skirts – Personally I’d only do a mini if it wasn’t very mini, and probably only with tights. But you do what makes you feel good.
Bag – Go with a small cross-body bag. You know I’m a queen of the huge tote, but for a concert you really need something small, simple and hands-free.
Jewelry – Have fun with your jewelry! The layered look that’s so hot right now is perfect with your rock n roll outfit.
Belt – Black leather with studs or grommets is always a great choice.
Scarf – You can always add a long skinny animal print scarf or something with a cool skull design (think Alexander McQueen).
Sunglasses – Add ROCK STAR sunnies for extra attitude! Of course this makes better sense outside in the daytime, but sometimes a diva doesn’t need the sun to wear her fav shades.
Hats – A floppy black felt hat or a newsboy cap can be a cute addition to your rock concert look.
Common Pitfalls
Mistake #1 – Wearing exactly what you would’ve worn to concert … when you were 21 … in 1987. Enough said, Ladies?!
Mistake #2 – Not enjoying the chance to dress a little differently than usual. Don’t just wear something that you’d wear to work or to the movies. Sure you could, but this is a chance to be playful and let a bit of your inner rocker come out and play. Step out of your comfort zone a bit …but …
Mistake #3 – Don’t take it to the extreme either! Don’t wear something so unlike you that you look like you’re wearing a Halloween costume!
Okay, so those are my tips, Dolls. And remember again, you do you; that’s always the most important thing. Have any other outfit ideas for us? Share in the comments. And if you’re heading out to a concert anytime soon, take a pic and tag me on social so I can check you out!!

You are the cutest groupie ever!!!
HAHA … thanks! 😀
I’ve been a rocker all my life but I never wore rock outfits. Just don’t like jeans! But I do wear leather jackets and biker boots, but worth a black dress! Hope to see you on my Fancy Friday link up party
Love the idea of the biker jacket and boots with a black dress. Thanks for the tip!! 😀
Thoughts on what to wear to a Summer outdoor concert?
How fun! During the day or evening? How hot do you think it will be? I’d probably go for a tee and jeans, some Converse sneakers, and a baseball cap for the daytime!
