Entering into a new year, I always like to take stock of things, especially my wardrobe! As I continuously strive for a more wearable, workable, and thoughtful wardrobe, I’ve started a few habits that I’d like to share with you.

Shop my most worn items of 2025: Quince Bella Wide-Leg Jeans, Basic Tee, Braided Leather Belt, Cozy JBU Shoes, Packable Lightweight Rain Coat, Naot Sunset Sneakers, Lucky Utility Jacket, All Saints Crossbody, Kut from the Kloth Jeans, and these luxe suede boots by Inez.
First of all, every day I snap a photo of my outfit in the mirror. Sometimes I have wet hair and no lipstick, but it’s okay because these pics are just for me. This way I can keep a record of what I wear and what I wear where! I started doing this in July 2023. And although I’ve forgotten some days here and there, for the most part I have over 2 years of useful wardrobe data.
I’ve also started using a few wardrobe apps on my phone. So far I’m using Whering and Acloset. They are both free for the basics, which is good enough for me right now. It takes awhile to set everything up by taking photos of your clothing and entering them into the app, but it is kind of fun too. And the process forces you to make note of exactly what you have.
One of my goals for 2026 is to reduce my total number of wardrobe pieces. How many? Well, I’m not sure. I love reading about people who try Project 333, where they wear 33 pieces only for 3 months. That includes shoes, bag, and jewelry! I find that fascinating, but it really feels too limited to make me happy. Maybe 100 pieces?
Also, I like to think of the season ahead and what pieces I might need in my closet for what’s next. Spring is just around the corner. And looking even further ahead, I’m retiring this year and what will that mean for my wardrobe needs? I don’t really have the answers yet, but it’s fun to think about. I know as a teacher, one of my wardrobe staples is the “teacher dress” … wash and wear, one and done, wrinkle free, modest and comfortable. Will I still be wearing those in retirement? I’m guessing I’ll be more of a denim and athleisure gal. But we’ll see, right?
I have several articles that I’ve written in the past that might help you get your wardrobe in shape for 2026: How to Do a Closet Clean Out and How to Build a Wardrobe! These are my most popular posts and I hope you enjoy them!
Do you have any goals for your wardrobe in 2026?
