The dreaded midlife crisis …. we’ve all heard it about it. And getting older has its challenges for sure. But I have to say that for me, midlife has been way more fun than I ever expected. Here’s some reasons why I actually LOVE being a middle-aged woman!
SELF-CARE IN MIDLIFE
It seems to be that this time in our life is the perfect time to start focusing on taking great care of ourselves. Actually, anytime is a great time for that, but many of us felt spread thin in our younger days: learning how to do a healthy relationship, caring for young children, proving ourselves in our career, and taking care of aging parents. You still may be faced with some of these tasks, but as we age, I feel like our life opens up a bit and we have more time for self-reflection and self-care.
My story here is a bit different than most. I choose not to have children, so my care-taking was for elderly parents. (And believe me if I had a choice, I’d give anything to still be taking care of them.)
MIDLIFE CONFIDENCE SURGE
I hear about this newfound confidence from many of my midlife sisters. We know ourselves better. I know that I reach out for adventures that might have intimidated me when I was younger. Blogging is one of those adventures for sure! I’m not sure if I could’ve had the guts to put myself out there in my 20’s. There’s something to be said for being just being comfortable being you and caring less what people think.
FINANCIAL SECURITY
Hopefully the days of living month-to-month are long behind us. We can enjoy spending a little money on fun things like vacations and duh …. clothes!
LOOKS IN MIDLIFE
Now, stop laughing. There ARE good things about our looks as we age. First of all, that confidence surge makes us more beautiful for sure. On top of that, breakouts are mostly a thing of the past, right? We don’t have to wash our hair as often. And best of all, no one expects us to look good in a bikini anymore. Hey if you do, great, but no one expects it. Hallelujah, pass me a cookie and a cute cover up!
MENOPAUSE
Along with all the hot flashes and weird hormonal mood swings, there are some things to be celebrated: no more periods, no more PMS, no more pregnancy scares! And my favorite: you can use “menopause brain” as an excuse for just about anything. (It really is a thing, google it!)
LOOKING AHEAD
And hey there’s still so much to look forward to! At 50 years old, I had a life long dream come true: I attended New York Fashion Week! Who knows what 51 will bring?
And down the road a bit I see more blessings waiting for us, like senior discounts and retirement!
And did you know that there’s research that shows that from our 50’s on we actually get happier?!!
So what do you like about being your age, Dolls, whatever that age may be?!

I love your attitude — and how it reflects the name of your blog. In this post, you mention caring for elderly parents … I did that too, right after I became an empty nester. Now that my folks are gone and my son is grown and married, it’s MY turn. Because of beautiful bloggers like you, I am inspired to do more for myself, guilt free and joyfully. Thank you so much for this post.
Awww, thanks for this sweet comment, Cindy. It’s readers like you that make all this worthwhile! OXOX
Hooray for getting older!! I do love it, love it, love it!!

Aww thanks so much for the comment, Deanna! It has it’s challenges, but honestly it’s been so fun too and such an adventure!! OXOX
Hell yes to a cookie and a cover up! Love it all and it is so true, this is the time of our lives!
Yes it is, Kellyann! 😀
I totally agree …my 40’s have been some of the happiest years for me. Just really embracing who I truly am and not worrying about what other people are thinking about it was huge. Learning to laugh at myself has been huge too. Thanks for sharing! I’m seriously counting the days to menopause!!!
Yes, I love the attitude of most midlife women …. we just are more comfortable in our own skin, right? And yes to menopause, especially once the hot flashes wane a bit! OXOX
I agree with all of these. My 50’s were my best decade yet, and I’m excited about my 60’s.
I’m sure your 60’s are going to be fabulous, Susan! Can’t wait to follow along!! 😀
I totally agree! I turn 50 this year and I’ve never felt better! And I totally agree with not getting concerned what others think. Yay to that!!Cheers to us happy mid-life gals!

Yay for us! Remember what we thought 50 would be like when we were younger? Actually, no I don’t either … we seldom thought this far ahead!! 😉
This: “just being comfortable being you and caring less what people think.” It’s so freeing! Wait till age 61, it gets even better. Love this post, and your swimsuit coverup too! xox

You give me hope with this post! Lol! At 46, I wonder how I will feel at 50 but the confidence is slowing seeping in. Thanks for sharing these honest thoughts and keep rocking those fashions lady!

You are amazing at 46 and I bet the best is yet to come in your 50’s, Kathrine! Lots of wonderful things ahead for all of us! 🙂
Great post and I admire your spirit and joie de vivre. I’d like to say I agree with everything, but after becoming unexpectedly on the jobs market and finding so few companies are willing to even talk to me because of my age, (although they never say that of course) shows that ageism is still alive and well.

Oh that must be tough. I’ve been teaching in the same district for 25 years, so it’s been that long since I’ve had a job interview. Good luck and keep us posted! Big hugs!
What a great post! I spent the entire day in doctors’ offices—bursitis, neck issues, etc etc.–but your post put it all into perspective. And I agree, I NEVER would have had the guts to blog in my younger years! At 55 who cares what people think!
Love you! XO Susan http://www.themidlifefashionista.com
Love you, Susan! OXOX
This is a great post Dawn Lucy, and you are right about everything!! I love your positive spirt. Always so uplifting!!
Love, Ann from Kremb de la Kremb
Thanks so much, Ann! OXOX
You can look forward to Fun times ahead and I love your foxy attitude. I’m doing things now like posting outfit photos I never would have back when I was younger. At 65 I feel good that I’m able to live on a budget, and wear what I want with reckless abandon. Enjoy every moment. . .
Sounds like you’re doing 65 right, Neti!! 😀
What a great post and wonderful message, Dawn Lucy! I am about to turn 43 and I am just now experiencing a new found confidence in all aspects of my life! I look forward to seeing where I am at 50. I can only imagine that it just gets better from here on out!

You are rocking 43, Shelbee, and I know you have way more fun ahead of you too! 🙂
Haha, what a fantastic post! I laught out loud! Hurray for women over 50!
A laugh out loud is always good for the soul!! 😀
Thanks for this great post. I agree with everything you say and must admit that I feel so many of the pressures from my younger days seem to have melted away with the years. Confidence to be ourselves is indeed a great bonus and like you, I would never have considered running a blog in my younger years (if such things existed). Next year I will be 60 and can only say “Bring it on!”

Good for you, Anna! Bring it on, indeed! You’ll be rocking 60!!! OXOX
Dawn,
This is a delightful post!
Middle Age is scary and comes without instruction.
Which can be a good thing, since we all embrace our second act differently.
Hugs.
Robin
Yeah, I wish I still had my mom around to talk to about menopause stuff, but at least I have many other wonderful women in my life! OXOX
I do agree with you, beeing middle age is nothing to fear, I think I have a lot more confidence now at the age of 55 than I ever had before. Even though I need to live my life in slow motion due to some health problems I still feel life is good and I can do pretty much what I want if I only plan a little ahead.
Do love your blog.

I think we all slow down a bit. Thanks so much for your comment! 🙂
I love this! There are always reasons to celebrate in every season of life!

Thanks for joining the Top of the World Style linkup party.
;I so agree, but yes, menopause, as I am not quite there yet, doesn’t seem like fun! I like the idea of not caring what others think as much ( in regard to clohtes) !
